Literary Fan Club

FAQs are documents that list and answer the most common questions on a particular subject. There are hundreds of FAQs on subjects as diverse as Pet Grooming and Cryptography. FAQs are usually written by people who have tired of answering the same question over and over.

You are the president of a fan club for your favourite author. Eager for literary discussion and insights into your author's works, you set up a mailing list and wait patiently for the flood of subscribers. After a week one member signs up. His first message asks the question, "What books did this author write?" This is not exactly the kind of literary discussion you had in mind. You decide to create some promotional materials to target the right audience for your fan club.

The Task

To attract members to your author's fan club you have decided to create your own web pages. You design an advertisement for the fan club and create a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) list to distribute to new members. You can create these in Microsoft Word and will receive help in putting them up on the Internet.

The Process

1. Choose an author whom you have read and enjoyed. Research your author to find out details of his/her life:

o where and how he/she grew up

o his/her personal relationships

o his/her works

o how his/her work has generally been received

o any other area of his/her life which interests you

2. Develop a FAQ list about your author. What should be obvious to fans of this author? What pieces of trivia would fans enjoy knowing about this author? Remember, your FAQ list should include answers to what you believe may be the most common questions, curiosities, and confusions about your author.

3. Create a full-page advertisement for your fan club. Include:

o a catchy slogan

o the goals of your club (what do you envision members discussing?)

o a few interesting facts about your author that might grab the attention of prospective members

o at least one graphic

Research Project

We have had quite a few periods in the Library working on our research projects.
These are due on the 18th of June.
Here is the task if you have misplaced yours:

*Year 9 Research Task – Planning a Deluxe Holiday

Hello Travel Agent!

An adult family member has asked you to plan a deluxe holiday for them. You have accepted the challenge!

The holiday needs to have the following criteria:

  • The trip must be overseas (outside New Zealand).
  • Your client (the holidaymaker) must be 18 years or older.
  • Your client must NEVER have been to this destination before.
  • The travel agent (you) must have never been to this destination before.
  • The trip needs to be 7 days long.
  • At least two cities or locations within the chosen country must be visited during the holiday (your client cannot stay in the one place for the whole holiday).

You will be presenting this task in the form of a travel itinerary or brochure.

A detailed travel itinerary/brochure should include the following:

Ø Return flights from New Zealand to the destination – include times, price and airline.

Ø Details of each place to be visited including:

o The name

o Some history

o Things to see and do

o A picture of each location to be visited

o A map of each location/city to be visited

o Hotels to stay in each night

o Day trip choices for the client

Ø Information on how to get from one location/city to the other (bus/train/flight etc.) and how much.

Ø Total price for client to pay (at the end of itinerary).

Please note: All prices you get need to be accurate based on RESEARCH. You cannot make up prices. If the research gives you a range of prices, choose the highest price. This is the more sensible option so your client can budget for the holiday better. You may obtain prices in the currency from the country you are researching. You overall price needs to be converted into NZ$. You will learn how to do this in class.

This project is due on: ________________________

Completing the Task

Interview

1. You must first interview your client about where they would like to go. Prepare some OPEN questions before your interview so you know what to ask. Write your questions down below. Consider important elements including: who will be accompanying them on the trip; budget; type of holiday they would like (relaxing, adventurous); places they have always wanted to go. When interviewing them, write their answers below each question.

Your Decision

2. Deciding on the destination. Your client might give you a few ideas on where they would like to go. But you get to decide based on the answers they have given you. Remember neither of you can have been to this location before.

My Client is going to ______________________________________

I have chosen this destination because ________________________

Brainstorm

3. In the space below brainstorm everything you already know about the location/destination. Remember a brainstorm is everything in your brain so get it out quickly. After you have completed your brainstorm, order your information into sections/categories. If you run out of room do on the back of this page.

Starting your research

4. To achieve in this task successfully you must use a minimum of three different types of research tools. We will have done some background work on research in class and in the library which will help you make your choices. Some examples for this task might be: travel brochures; the internet; travel guides such as ‘Lonely Planet’; travel section in newspapers; non-fiction books; people who have visited these places; magazines and periodicals.

You will need to put the entire bibliography at the end of this booklet once you have finished the task. Specify your choices below, please remember you must use at least one book in your options.

5. Planning and RESEARCHING. Begin by finding information on your location and making a plan for the trip. Filling in the calendar below will help you plan better and make your decisions clearer for you to see. Remember to think of activities, accommodation and transport. If you would like to choose their restaurants/meals you can do that too. Please be aware, depending on flight times and their location, most of Day 1 and Day 7 will be spent travelling.

Making your brochure

6. Once you have done all your research and planning, begin making the final copy of your travel itinerary for your client. Use the check lists on the first page of this booklet to check you have included everything.

If you are stuck for a layout or a way to get started consider trying this EXAMPLE:

Text Box: Dear Mary, Your trip to Rome and Venice in Italy has been fully planned and the itinerary is below. I really hope you like the trip I have planned! I have spent lots of time making arrangements for you and thinking about what you would like to do on your holiday. You will need currency for the country you are visiting and you should get it from the bank before you go. The currency is Euros and the current exchange rate is NZ$1 = €0.50 Day 1 (insert picture and map of location) – Christchurch, NZ – Rome, Italy Today you will leave Christchurch on Flight QF123 at 10.00am. You will arrive in Rome, Italy at 12pm. I have booked you into the hotel ‘Roma’ near the station which is €100 per night. It has a spa bath and gym downstairs. You get a free breakfast as well! Day 2 – Rome, Italy Today you are going to see the Coliseum. It costs €10 entry. You can walk there from your hotel if you like. At the Coliseum you can (fill in information here). The Coliseum is really amazing because (fill in information here too). Tonight you will stay in hotel ‘Roma’ again.

Itineraries for days 3-7 will be very similar with your client hopefully seeing all the sights of their destination. With research you will find out what is available to do in their holiday destination. Remember also that your client will visit two different places on their trip.

7. The Journey.

On the map below – draw the journey your client is taking to get to their holiday. Please include any side trips whilst on their holiday and the trip back again. Submit this map with your finished itinerary.

Bibliography

8. Please list below every research tool you have used. Make sure you source all utilised information properly. Please fill in your bibliography in the space below. A bibliography should include:

a. Name of book

b. Author/s

c. Publisher

d. Year published

e. Page number/s used referred to

Finishing off

9. Before you submit your research project you must check you have done everything. Here is a final checklist.

Ø Completed booklet (this one) including interview questions, brainstorm, filled in graph, map and bibliography.

Ø A finished brochure or itinerary including all of the following:

o Flight information including times, price and airline.

o The name of each place to be visited

o Some history on each place

o Things to see and do in each location

o A picture of each location

o A map of each location/city

o Hotels to stay in each night

o Day trip information

o Information on how to get from one location/city to the other (bus/train/flight etc.) and how much.

o Total price for client to pay (at the end of itinerary).

Some final questions to answer

1. What did you find challenging about this project?

2. What parts did you enjoy the most?

3. What parts did you like the least?

4. What research skills did you learn whilst doing this task?

5. When do you think you will use these skills in ‘real life’?

Love That Dog

For the past few weeks we have been studying the text "Love that Dog " by Sharon Creech.
Today we looked at the elements of a novel: PLOT, CHARACTER SETTING THEME and STYLE.
We are now in groups for each element and are developing presentations on each of these aspects.

What will Your Verse Be?

Welcome!

So here is our blog for English.
The aim is to post about the work we are doing, deadlines that need to be met and perhaps discuss ideas that arise from our work in class. Hopefully this will be of some use to you.
All the best,
Ms Murnane
